A client from Littletown recently dropped into Westminster Speed and Sound to inquire about upgrading the sound system on his 2024 Harley-Davidson Street Glide. While we’ve done hundreds of Harley sound system upgrades, the stock stereo on the 2024 models is decidedly different from the others. Not to worry, we worked with the client to choose audio components that would work with the stock radio and deliver the performance he expected from such a gorgeous machine.
Harley-Davidson Radio Integration
The newest Harley-Davidson radios use a digital communication protocol called A2B to send audio information to the factory amplifier. To ensure the new equipment we wanted to install will sound great, we used a NAV-TV ZEN-H Harley-Davidson preamp interface to generate a clean, flat audio signal.
We fed the output of the ZEN-H to a Cicada Audio DSP600.4D four-channel amplifier with an integrated digital signal processor. The processor allows us to set filters for each pair of speakers to let them play their loudest without distorting. We also used it to equalize the sound from each speaker so that it sounds good to the rider. Without this vital step, many motorcycle audio systems sound harsh and screechy.
As you can see, we set up the processor using an audio analyzer and a microphone. This eliminates all the guesswork involved in making the system sound great.
Motorcycle Speaker Upgrade
The client chose Cicada Audio CHX65.2 Pro Coax horn speakers for the front fairing. These high-efficiency speakers install right into the stock locations in the front fairing. To round out the sound, we suggested the Diamond Audio MSMP692LK24 bag lid speaker kit, which features the MP692 6×9-inch Pro Horn speakers.
The rear speaker kit includes mounting brackets and grilles for the new speakers. It also includes a cutting template to create the speaker location in the stock saddlebag lids. Once the opening is made, the grille and mount are sandwiched together over the bag lids. We added a set of water-repelling Frogzskin mesh inserts to the speaker covers to keep water out while letting sound pass through.
