A local client contacted the team at Westminster Speed and Sound about a Chevrolet Corvette radar detector and laser defence system. We met with the client to discuss his goals for the system and inspect the vehicle. Armed with the knowledge we needed, we provided several quotes that offer different levels of protection and integration. The client chose one of our premium offerings. Let’s look at the work our team performed to integrate a Uniden radar detector into this stunning 2026 Corvette ZR1.
Radar Receiver Installation
Integrating a custom-installed radar detection system like this Uniden R9W requires some vehicle disassembly to do it properly. Our team removed the front and rear bumper covers to run wiring for the laser transponders and radar antennas. All the wiring follows the same route as the factory harnesses to keep it away from heat sources and moving parts. There are quick disconnects on all the wiring, allowing the bumper covers to be removed without modifying any wiring.
The front receiver is mounted just inboard of the driver’s side headlight and bolted securely to the bumper support. The rear receiver is under the bumper support on the driver’s side. In both cases, the receivers will have no trouble detecting signals from police radar guns right through the plastic covers.
Laser Transponder Pods
The Uniden R9W system can handle up to six laser transponders. After looking at the front bumper, we created a pair of pods to conceal four transponders behind IR-transparent acrylic. The pods mount at the top of the center air inlet.
We repeated the process on the rear of the Corvette with two more laser transponders, each in its own pod above the license plate. We ensure that each sensor is mounted parallel to the ground to maximize range and effectiveness.
Control and Display Installation
The client wanted the control panel mounted in an easy-to-reach location. We routed the wire through the dash and mounted the control just below the engine start-stop button. A custom 3D-printed bracket holds the control panel securely. The Uniden display is housed in the overhead console, so it’s easy to see.
System Testing Ensures Reliability
Once everything was installed and the bumper covers were back in place, we used our radar and LiDAR guns to verify that the sensors were operating properly and could detect signals at appropriate distances.
When the client returned to Westminster Speed and Sound, we went through the installation with him, then showed him how to use the LiDAR defence system efficiently. He was thrilled with the work and was anxious to get the car back on the road.
