A client from Baltimore brought his Shark Blue 2025 Boxster to Westminster Speed and Sound in hopes of improving the audio system. After talking with the client, it became apparent he wanted the system to play louder with sharper imaging. We’ve worked on many Porsche vehicles, so we were able to suggest a speaker and amplifier upgrade that would deliver the performance he wanted. Happy with the quote, he gave us the go-ahead to schedule an appointment.
Porsche Boxster Speaker Upgrades
We started the project by removing the trim panels from the driver and passenger doors so we could treat them with Hushmat Silencer Megabond and Ultra Sound Deadening. The goal is to reduce road noise transfer into the cabin and prevent buzzes or rattles from the upgraded woofers we’ll install.
Next, we removed the stock woofer and midrange driver from each door to make way for new speakers from Helix. Our fabrication team made a set of adapter rings to mount a set of 8-inch i5-series woofers and an i7-series midrange driver in the stock locations. We replaced the stock tweeters in the dash with an i7-Series 3/4-inch soft dome units.
Audio Integration and Amplification
An audio system is only as good as the signal it starts with. We used a Zen-V preamp to extract a full-bandwidth audio signal from the factory source unit. Unlike tapping into speaker wires, using the Zen preamp ensures direct compatibility between the radio and the new system amplifier. In fact, we used a fiber-optic TOSLINK connection between the two to ensure the system would be noise-free and sound the best it could.
The key to making the new speakers sound amazing is the digital signal processor in the Match UP 6DSP amplifier we added. This six-channel amp provides 65 watts of power to the midrange and tweeters, and 160 watts to the new woofers. We used the processor to set delays for the speakers closest to the listening position, then fine-tuned the output of each of the six speakers to provide a warm, rich sound with good bass extension. Those eight-inch woofers deliver remarkably impressive bass.

Once the system installation, configuration and calibration were complete, the client returned to Westminster Speed and Sound to pick up the vehicle. He was thrilled with the sound!
