A client from Sykesville came to Westminster Speed and Sound for what turned into a Ford Super Duty truck stereo upgrade. After explaining where the stock audio system fell short in performance, we discussed how more power, better speakers, good subwoofers, and proper system configuration and calibration would transform the sound system into something extraordinary. The client loved the plan, so we scheduled an installation to start the sound system transformation.
F-250 Super Duty Pickup Truck Speaker Upgrade
The first step in improving the sound of this F-250 stereo was upgrading the speakers. The client chose the Helix i7 series drivers for the front stage. After installing SoundShield sound deadening on the doors, we cut custom mounting adapters to install 6.5-inch woofers in the stock door location and 0.75-inch Helix tweeters in the dash. Another ABS plastic adapter set allowed us to install i3-Series coaxial speakers in the rear doors.
DSP-Equipped Amplifier Solution
With the speakers and deadening installed, it was time to build an amp rack and integrate it with the factory-installed radio. We used a PAC AmpPRO AP4-FD21 interface to extract a full-bandwidth audio signal to feed into the Helix M SIX DSP amplifier. This 100-watt-per-channel amplifier includes a 10-channel digital signal processor. The processed output from the amp feeds a Helix M ONE X subwoofer amp.
The amp’s digital signal processor allows us to set crossovers, output levels, and signal delays for each speaker. We used our RTA microphone to ensure each speaker produced a smooth frequency response at the listening position.
We installed the amps on a custom panel attached to the back wall of the F-250. The panel uses original hardware to secure it in place, so no new holes are required. Power is provided by a Stinger Select Series 4-AWG amp kit connected to the battery under the hood.
Custom Truck Subwoofer Enclosure
One of our custom truck subwoofer enclosures is the icing on the cake for this sound system. Our team created the enclosure to house a pair of Helix IKS-12D2 subwoofers and fit it perfectly under the rear seats. We added a backlit Super Duty logo to the enclosure’s face to make it the focal point of the audio system. The brown leather piping around the top edge matches the truck’s upholstery, giving it a perfect “looks like it belongs” appearance.
Baltimore’s Pickup Truck Stereo Upgrade Experts
After several days of work, this Ford F-250 stereo system was upgraded and sounded great. The client returned to Westminster Speed and Sound and immediately hopped in for a listen. The music was loud and clear, like being at a concert. The way we calibrated the system made it sound like the music came from good full-range home speakers in the front corners of the dash. He loved it! Though we didn’t get any pictures, we added RGB LED rock lights in the wheel wells. They give the truck a custom look without going overboard.
