A client from Cockeysville recently brought this 2012 Porsche 911 Turbo S to Westminster Speed & Sound for a stereo system upgrade. Not only was the Porsche’s technology dated, but the factory audio system was lifeless and didn’t play loudly. After hearing the audio system in our Porsche demo car, the client knew he wanted the same thing for his 911.
The Foundation: Sound Deadening
The first order of business was to deaden the door panels with Hushmat sound deadening. This reduced road noise transfer into the cabin and made the interior quieter. Next, we treated the inner door trim panels with SoundShield triple-layer sound deadening. This also improves noise isolation and prevents buzzes and rattles.
New Technology Upgrade
The client wanted a radio with modern smartphone integration. We provided a Sony Mobile ES XAV-9000ES multimedia receiver. Not only does this radio offer flagship-level high-resolution audio playback, but it has a great anti-glare screen that looks fantastic. We used a custom trim piece to make the new radio look like it came with the car from Zuffenhausen.
We repurposed the USB-A port in the center console with a 3D-printed adapter to house the USB-C port from the Sony radio. We also installed dedicated front and rear cameras on the car to make parking safer and easier.
Amplification and Speaker Upgrade
To bring the system to life, we replaced the front speakers in the Porsche with new drivers from Helix and BLAM. We mounted a set of i3-Series eight-inch woofers in the doors to handle low-frequency duties. A set of three-inch BLAM Live Series midrange speakers replace the drivers in the door panels. We finished the upgrades off with a set of 0.75-inch i3-Series tweeters in the stock dash location.
The system is powered by a Match UP 8DSP eight-channel amplifier. This DSP-equipped amp is mounted under the passenger seat in place of the factory-installed amplifier. We ran dedicated speaker wires from each speaker to the amp and repowered the OEM rear speakers to serve as fill. The DSP handles crossovers, signal delays and most importantly, equalization for each speaker in the car.
Radar Detector Prevents Tickets
The client already had a portable radar detector for the car. We installed it on a Blendmount bracket that attaches to the rear-view mirror. All the wiring from the detector is now concealed, so everything is neat and tidy.
Baltimore’s Porsche Upgrade Experts
It took several days to execute the installation on this gorgeous Porsche 911 Turbo S stereo system and technology upgrade. The results, however, were worth every second. The system is detailed and clear, and the music is presented across the dash of the car, like the owner is sitting at the console of a world-class recording studio. To say he was thrilled is an understatement.
