A repeat client from Westminster came to Westminster Speed & Sound, looking to upgrade the audio system in his beautiful 1973 VW Super Beetle. When he pulled into the parking lot with this bright-orange VW, we knew it had to be our client. One of our team spent significant time on going over the vehicle, listening as the client expressed his ideas, and then offered some of our thoughts and ideas. Once we were done looking at the vehicle, we came back inside and listened to audio equipment with him that we thought best suited his needs. At the end of the consultation, we worked up a proposal for the client and he liked our ideas, so we set an installation date.
The instant we saw it, we knew this Beetle was special. While it was not 100% original, the modifications were subtle and allowed the vehicle to be returned to stock, should the need ever arise. We took this thought process into account in our build, designing a system that can be completely removed, leaving the vehicle unmodified.
Sony Radio Gives This 70’s Beetle New Tech
We installed a Sony MEX-GS610BT Cd player with integrated Bluetooth in the factory location in the dash. We used all new wiring for the upgrades because the factory wiring was over 40 years old, and it was time for to retire it.
JL Audio Speakers And Subwoofer
When it came time to choosing speakers for the vehicle, we went to JL Audio, choosing the C3-650 6.5” component system and a single 10TW3-D4 10” subwoofer. We built a custom enclosure to hold the three speakers in the recessed area behind the rear seat. We covered the enclosure with a black carpet that blended well with the black seats and carpeting already in the vehicle. As you can see in the pictures, once the grilles were installed, the finished product looked right at home in this Super Beetle and eliminated the need to cut it up.
JL Audio Amplifier Powers System
Once the speakers were done, it was time to choose power, and we went back to JL Audio, choosing the XD500/3v2 amplifiers. These provide almost 500 watts of clean power to the system, giving the client all the power he will ever need to crank up Buddy Holly or Led Zeppelin while driving up the road. We mounted the amplifier securely underneath the rear seat, completely hidden from view.
