A client from Sykesville brought his 2018 Toyota Tundra to Westminster Speed and Sound for a radio and subwoofer system upgrade. The client had seen some of the large floating-face radio upgrades available and wanted one for this vehicle. He also wanted a subwoofer system to add some warmth and impact to the music he listens to. After looking at some of the options on our display, we put together a quote to upgrade this Tundra to deliver the features and sound performance the client wanted.
Big Screen Radio Upgrade for Toyota Pickup Truck
We started the project by removing the factory radio to upgrade it with a Stinger Heigh10 unit. This radio features a 10-inch floating-face capacitive-touch display and includes both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration. Being able to use the voice recognition features of his smartphone safely was a key request from the client.
Our technicians integrated the new radio with the factory-installed JBL audio system and the steering wheel’s radio controls, and with the existing backup camera. We added a dual USB extension port to make connecting his phone or a USB memory stick easy for the client.
Tundra Subwoofer Upgrade
The next step was to install a JBL CLUB600AM subwoofer amplifier under the seat and connect it to the factory sound system. This compact amplifier can produce up to 350 watts of power. Next, we installed an MTi Acoustics subwoofer enclosure that includes a JL Audio 12TW3-4 12-inch shallow-mount sub against the back wall of the truck. The subwoofer output level is adjustable from the deck, and we enabled the high-pass filter in the radio to remove bass information from the door speakers.
When the client returned to Westminster Speed and Sound, a member of our team helped him connect his phone and showed him how to use the voice command features. He loves the way the system sounds and has plans to come back soon to add an amplifier and new speakers to improve the system’s clarity and output capabilities even more.
