A repeat client from New Windsor, Maryland, came to WSS Westminster Speed & Sound for a 2014 Audi Q7 custom radar detector and laser system installation. He has been a great client of ours for more than 25 years. While he was here, the topic of a custom-installed laser and radar detector came up. When we started explaining that a portable detector gave him no protection from laser, the conversation heated up quickly. We explained that a portable detector only alerts to the fact that you have been hit with laser, so all it is doing is letting you know you are about to get a ticket.
As you can imagine, he didn’t like hearing that. The conversation then changed to the benefits of a custom-installed unit and how it could do laser shifting, so the laser operator can’t get a reading on your vehicle. He was sold. At that point, we went out to the Audi and looked it over together. We explored where the laser shifters might go in the front and in the rear, and where we could place the display and controller. After discussing everything, we suggested using the Escort 9500ci with the optional rear laser shifters. He liked our idea, and we set an installation appointment.
We Offer Truly Custom Radar and Laser Systems
In our opinion, what separates a custom-installed laser and radar detector is the attention to detail in the installation. Many shops will only allow a certain amount of hours for an installation, and will cut corners to meet a deadline. We do things differently at WSS Westminster Speed & Sound. We try to sit down with every client, explore the vehicle inside and out, and go over goals for the installation. Does the client want everything hidden? Do they want the controls flush-mounted into the vehicle for a factory appearance? Do they need the optional rear laser shifters?
Every client and every install will be different, so for us, every job truly is a custom installation. We want to give our client exactly what they deserve, the best-performing system available with the cosmetic integration they desire in the interior.
Maximum Protection and a Solid Q7 Custom Radar and Laser System
This client wanted maximum protection with a more basic install in the interior. In the interior, we surface-mounted the display and controller in a convenient spot in front of the shifter where they could be easily covered from view should the need arise. We did not install the LED, as the combination of an easy-to-see display and audible alerts discounted the need for it. We flush-mounted the speaker underneath the dash in a good spot, along with the USB update port.
Radar Receiver Securely Mounted To Bumper Crossbeam
When it comes time to mount sensors, we only do one type of installation: top-performing. We figure if our clients are going to make a significant investment in their vehicle with a custom-installed lasers and radar detectors, they want all the performance they can get. That means mounting the radar receiver strategically behind the plastic bumper, securely mounted to a metal crossbeam. Radar receivers can be placed behind plastic and still work perfectly. The issue is not having any metal in front of them.
Critical Alignment For Laser Shifters
Laser shifters are completely different. They have to be in perfect alignment with the front of the vehicle, and have a clear shot at the road ahead. That is critical for them to be effective. When the shifters see a laser signal, they immediately fire back beams of light at the laser gun so it can’t get a reading on the vehicle, allowing time for the driver to check the speed. If the laser shifter is partially blocked or aimed incorrectly, it works poorly. Our team works very hard to find the best overall blend of cosmetics and performance, and securely mounts the shifters in place. No Velcro or tape will suffice for us.
Rear Laser Shifters Complete The Package
In the rear of the vehicle, we were able to mount the rear laser shifters above and outside the rear license plate, giving the client great protection in the event or a rear laser being shot at the vehicle.
The client loved the look of the installation and ease of use. To him, it looked like Audi installed the system for him, and that was our goal.
