Sykesville Client Upgrades Mustang Boss 302 Audio System

June 25, 2015 By staff Leave a Comment

WSS-Boss-302-HeaderA Ford client from Sykesville, Maryland, came to WSS Westminster Speed & Sound seeking an Mustang Boss 302 audio upgrade. What a beautiful ride! One of our team members went out to the vehicle and looked it over with the client. We spent significant time on getting to know him better and his goals for the audio upgrade. As the information started flowing, we realized that this guy loved music and had owned several nice car audio systems in the past. He was looking to build a long-term relationship and had read about us online. We were honored that he came to see us. When we were done with gathering information, we offered him what we felt was his best solution and he liked our idea, so we set an installation date.

AudioControl LC2i Allows Great Sound While Retaining The Factory Radio

To preserve the factory look of the dash we kept the OEM radio as the signal source.

We knew from the beginning that the client wanted to keep his stock radio intact so the interior of his Mustang would look as stock as possible. This meant we were going to use an interface to allow the original radio to communicate with new amplifiers, and we chose an Audiocontrol LC2i for this purpose. It is a powered, active device that sends a stronger, cleaner signal back to the amplifiers in the trunk.

JL Audio Amplifiers Provide Power For Active System

Mustang Boss 302 Audio
The 2 JL Audio amplifiers are mounted on the seat backs where they take up virtually no useable space.

When it came time to choose amplifiers, it was relatively easy since he already owned JL Audio amplifiers that we took out of his previous vehicle. A 500/1 was used to power the subwoofer, and a 300/4 was used to power the front speakers. As we were looking for the best sound quality possible, we ran all of the new speaker’s active, off of their own dedicated amplifier channels. The JL amplifiers come with a high quality electronic crossover network that allows us this capability. We made a simple amp rack that attached to the back of the rear seat to hold both amplifiers in a clean, neat look.

JL Audio Stealthbox Gives Plenty Of Bass With Factory Look

Tucked off to the side of the trunk the JL Audio Stealthbox does a great job at pounding out the bass and taking up minimal space.

When it came time for bass, we went back to JL Audio and used one of their Stealthboxes. It houses a 13W3v3 subwoofer that just plain gets down. It reproduces low-end bass in an effortless fashion, and the end result is crisp and tight, making a kick drum come alive in your car. The Stealthbox is made out of fiberglass and is molded into the passenger corner of the trunk, so the client loses very little trunk space. A black grille protects the subwoofer from any cargo that goes in the trunk.

Upgraded Front Speakers Installed Behind Factory Panels

Behind the door card resides upgraded speakers and a door that is damped to reduce vibration and increase sound quality.

With the doors sound proofed, speakers installed, and door cards reinstalled, the result is a factory look and improved sound quality.

When it came time for front speakers, we reused the client’s high-quality, German-made components. As you can see from the pictures, we fabricated a custom mount so both the woofer and tweeter could fit behind the stock door panel. This continues our theme of keeping the interior looking as original as possible. We applied Hushmat sound-damping material to the door skins to eliminate the possibility of vibration and rattling from the upgraded speakers.

Bass Level Knob Provides Easy Control Of Subwoofer Volume

The remote subwoofer level control knob is mounted in a convenient spot for easy control of the bass level.

For the final touch, we installed a bass level control knob in the lower dash panel, out of sight of the naked eye, but still in easy reach of the driver. Now the client can adjust the amount of bass in his music.

Excited Client Was Grinning From Ear To Ear After Hearing the Mustang Boss 302 Audio Suystem

We were excited to give the vehicle back to the client, as we were very pleased with the cosmetics and the sound quality. Our installation team spent significant time on tuning the amplifiers to extract every last ounce of sound quality out of the system. When we took the client out to his vehicle, he loved the fit and finish. But at the end of the day, a car audio system is about the sound – it has to perform. When we cranked it up for the first time, he was grinning from ear to ear. He said it sounded fantastic. And that was music to our ears.
