A client from Westminster, Maryland came to WSS Westminster Speed & Sound with his 2003 GMC Denali. The vehicle was in great shape overall, but the original GMC GPS system had seen better days. To say it was outdated would be putting it mildly. He wanted a cutting edge GPS Navigation unit in the dash of his GMC that would give him Bluetooth for hands-free calling and music streaming, and the ability to integrate his iPhone into the unit. He also requested Satellite radio. We went out to his truck and looked over the vehicle and the current Bose audio system. We asked the client several questions, and based on his responses, we designed what we felt was the best solution for him.
Kenwood Navigation Unit Replaces Factory GMC GPS
A Kenwood DNX690HD GPS Navigation unit was chosen for a few reasons. It is very easy to use and it allows a lot of integration with the client’s iPhone. He now will have Bluetooth for music streaming and hands-free calling. He gets full control over the Pandora Internet Radio app, plus full control on all the music on his iPhone. He also gained some neat features like album art displaying on the touchscreen. We integrated this unit to work seamlessly with his steering wheel mounted stereo controls and his Bose sound system. Through conversation with the client we realized he liked satellite radio so we also installed a SiriusXM tuner that gets controlled by the Kenwood GPS unit in the dash. A backup camera was also installed with the image displaying on the Kenwood screen. A neat feature on the Kenwood unit is the ability to turn on the backup camera when driving down the road. If he is towing something it allows him to keep an eye on his hitch which can be a real blessing.
We discussed the age of the Bose system with the client. He agreed that he would upgrade the sound system to something better but this would be part of “phase two” for this vehicle. When he arrived to see, hear, and operate the finished product, he was very pleased. The icing on the cake was a custom mount that we installed that would hold his iPhone high up on the dash while in its Lifeproof case. The cable that connects his iPhone to the Kenwood unit was strategically placed to make it easy to plug in. Watching him smile as he used his equipment was what made this job special.
