A client from outside of Frederick, Maryland came to WSS Westminster Speed & Sound looking for a custom installed radar detector. They owned a 2010 Mercedes C63 and wanted a top-notch, quality installation. We sat down with the client and went over their objectives for a radar system. Then we went out to the vehicle to scope it out together, going over options for sensors and controls.
Stealth Is Key For This Custom Installed Radar Detector
After much discussion it was determined that the Escort 9500ci system would be the best solution. This unit comes with the best quality radar detection on the market, along with laser shifting. The system is designed for a stealth install, so nothing is getting mounted from the windshield or on the dash. The idea here is to have a system that is completely integrated into the vehicle. It should turn on and off with the ignition and in simple terms, should look like Mercedes did the install.
Convenient Control Yet Easy To Conceal
If you look at the pictures you will notice an area in front of the shifter, where an ashtray was located. This is where we mounted the control module and display for the 9500ci. This allows our client quick and easy access, while making it very easy to conceal when necessary. A speaker was hidden under the driver’s side dash to give him audible alerts of any threats.
Laser Shifters Require Line Of Sight
The front and rear laser shifters were mounted near the license plate tags for maximum effectiveness. Laser shifters look for an actual laser signal, so they need to be in direct line of sight of the laser that is aimed at them. Radar sensors, on the other hand, can be mounted behind plastic as radar will pass right through it. You will notice that we showed a close up of the Mercedes star emblem. Hidden behind it is the radar sensor, so it is truly a stealth installation.
