A Porsche Club of America member from Bel Air reached out to us about upgrading the technology in his 2016 911 Carrera S. During our phone consultation, it was important to him that the vehicle retain its originality, so we discussed upgrades that would maintain its integrity. The dialogue began with adding a backup camera, but after learning we could also add wireless CarPlay and Android Auto to the stock PCM3.1 radio, he instantly gravitated towards that route. The product was ordered, and an install date was set.
When we suggest a backup or forward-facing camera, we are looking for the highest resolution with sharp focusing in dimly lit environments. And of course, it has to come in a housing that looks like a factory option. When our technicians route the camera cable, they use factory wiring locations, solder and heat-shrink all connections, and install a waterproof quick-release wiring connector, as the bumper comes off for frequent servicing and maintenance.

Once the camera installation was complete, our attention turned to installing the CarPlay & Android Auto module. With this particular radio, the install is pretty complex because we are adding a new circuit board inside the unit. When done properly, it works great, but be sure whoever is doing your work knows this radio well. One piece of good news is that this module also allows interfacing with the backup camera and offers a front camera option. Our module also utilizes the factory Bluetooth mic, so no interior changes were present.
Once the installation was complete and all testing done, it was time to deliver the vehicle to the client. Needless to say, he was pleased with his new technology.
