The owner of this 2011 Porsche 911S recently contacted the team at Westminster Speed and Sound to inquire about adding Apple CarPlay and a backup camera to the vehicle. After discussing how the factory-installed audio system performed, the McLean-based owner decided to proceed with a full sound system and technology upgrade. Let’s look at the details of the project.
Porsche 911S Technology Upgrades
The first order of business was to replace the factory-installed radio with a Sony XAV-9000ES Mobile ES multimedia receiver. We used a Porsche trim piece with the Sony radio to make the combination look like something that came from the factory, but with state-of-the-art features and performance. We modified the center console so that the client could connect a USB memory stick to play digital media files or connect his smartphone to charge the battery. Apple CarPlay automatically connects as soon as the radio turns on.
The last thing you’d ever want to do with a car this gorgeous is bump into a curb or bollard while parking. We installed dedicated forward-facing and backup cameras on the Porsche so the client can see all around the vehicle while parking or maneuvering.
Stereo System Enhancements
The fun started by removing the woofers and midrange speakers from the doors so our team could apply a few layers of sound deadening. The deadening not only prevents buzzes and rattles, but dramatically reduces the amount of road noise that comes into the interior.
Next, we installed a set of Helix i3-Series eight-inch woofers using Helix Compose adapters, while allow them to bolt directly to the doors. We also upgraded the midrange drivers to matching four-inch Helix units. The last step was to install 0.75-inch Helix i3 tweeters in the dash using another set of Compose adapters.
The new speakers are powered by a six-channel Match UP 6DSP amplifier. We mounted the amp under one of the seats, so it’s protected yet has airflow around it so it stays cool. The UP 6DSP amplifier has an integrated digital signal processor with crossovers, equalization and delay settings. Our team used our real-time audio analyzer to adjust the output of each speaker in the system to deliver impressive imaging and smooth, realistic frequency response.

Baltimore’s Porsche Audio Exports
It took a few days to get all the new equipment integrated into the Porsche 911S, but it was well worth the effort. The client was thrilled with how the car sounded, loved that everything looked like it belonged, and was happy to have the parking cameras. If your sports car needs a technology or audio upgrade, then drop by Westminster Speed and Sound and talk with a member of our award-winning team.
