Apple CarPlay Upgrade for Columbia Porsche 911 Owner 

A client from Columbia with a 2001 Porsche 911 came to Westminster Speed and Sound looking for a modern technology upgrade. One of our team members went out to his vehicle and looked it over with him to see how it was equipped. They spent time in our sound room and discussed different options for the upgrade. In the end, a proposal was generated and approved, and we set a time to work on the car.

Now the client has up-to-date mapping software at the control of his voice.

Our team began by removing the original CD player in the dash and the CD holder in the center console. As you can see in the finished pictures, the client got a pocket above the climate controls to conveniently hold small items. If you own a 996-series Porsche, you know that gaining any new storage areas is a blessing. We installed the Alpine iLX-207 unit in the dash with one of our installation kits that made it look as though it was a factory option back in 2001. This model now gives the driver Apple CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto, the safest ways to harness the power of a smartphone while driving. It also comes with an HD Radio tuner, Bluetooth for handsfree calling and music streaming, and the ability to control a SiriusXM tuner.

USB Port Integrated into Dash

If you look at one of the final photos, you can see an iPhone Lightning cable plugged into a USB port below the new stereo on the right side. Our technicians picked an unused location to flush the port into the dash, again giving it a factory appearance coupled with easy accessibility.

Backup Camera Completes the Package

The small backup camera looks factory.

Backing up safely now is easy with the new backup camera system.

If you have driven a 911, you know it has some serious blind spots when backing up. Fortunately, we have the capability to add a backup camera to this vehicle. The unit itself gets flushed into the bumper above the rear license plate. And more importantly, we integrate a quick-release connector for the camera, as the bumper often has to come off for vehicle service. Now, whenever the vehicle is put in reverse, the 7-inch screen displays a beautiful image of what’s behind the Porsche, making for easier navigating when backing up.
