
A client from Baltimore recently contacted Westminster Speed and Sound to inquire about a 2018 Porsche Cayman radar detector and laser defence upgrade solution. After discussing where and how the client drives, we suggested that one of our Escort custom-installed solutions would provide him with the best protection. We reviewed where we’d mount the hardware, controller and display for seamless operation. He loved our plan and gave us the go-ahead to schedule an installation appointment.
Porsche Cayman Radar Detector
Our first step in installing a radar detector in a modern vehicle is to remove the front and rear bumper covers. This provides us access to mounting locations for the radar antennas and wired routing for the laser shifters. We store the bumper covers on carpeted racks to ensure they won’t be bumped or damaged while our technicians work around the vehicle.
We mounted the front radar receiver to the aluminum frame in the front bumper. An expanded PVC plastic mounting adapter enabled us to secure the dual-antenna module, ensuring it had a clear line of sight and utilizing existing fastener locations. The rear radar receiver is positioned tightly against the back of the car, using the rear aluminum bumper support beam. All the wiring for the radar receivers is protected with split loom and follows factory wiring pathways to ensure it’s away from sources of heat and electrical interference.
Escort Laser Shifter Custom Installation
While one team member worked on the radar receivers and wiring, another designed and printed mounting pods for the five VX laser shifters. We printed three pods for the front of the vehicle and a custom dual-element pod for the rear. As you can see from the photos below, the front pods are installed underneath the bumper. We add IR-transparent acrylic to the front of the pods, making them appear black to the naked eye while providing impact protection to the shifters. The rear pod is mounted just above the license plate and uses its hardware to keep everything secure. You can see that all the wiring is routed so that the quick-disconnects are bundled together. Should the Porsche dealership need to remove the bumper, these connectors make it easy to take everything apart.
Radar Detector Display and Controls
We added a Wavtech IRAD to ensure the Escort main brain would have a stable power source. Once we finished mounting the main brain and running all the wiring, the last step was to integrate the OLED display and the controller. We 3D-printed a custom pod that would locate the display on top of the steering column trim. This space is unused, making it easy to see the source of radar or laser signals when the system detects them.
The control panel for the Escort Redline CI 360C is mounted in a 3D-printed insert that fits into the overhead panel on the vehicle’s roof. The driver needs unobstructed access to the control panel if the Cayman is targeted with police LIDAR. Once he has confirmed his speed, he cancels the laser shifting process, allowing the officer to take a measurement and enabling the owner to proceed on their journey.

It took us a few days to complete this Porsche Cayman radar detector and laser defence system. Once everything was done, we road-tested the system and confirmed that the radar and LIDAR performed as expected using our in-house speed measurement guns. We use these devices as part of our training with the client. Having a proper understanding of how to use the Escort system is crucial to avoiding getting a speeding ticket.
