A client from Owings Mills, Maryland, came to WSS Westminster Speed & Sound with his 2015 Honda GoldWing F6B. What a neat ride! It is essentially a stripped-down, blacked-out, hot-rodded GoldWing. And boy, does it look cool. But like any other motorcycle, the factory stereo system sounded anemic and was not listenable at speed. We have known this client on a personal level for more than 25 years and were looking forward to working with him. His requests were pretty simple: make it sound good, make it listenable at speed and keep the integrity of the bike intact. This Honda is a brand-new bike, and we had not done one yet, so we agreed that he would drop off the bike and we would do an audio evaluation on it. At that point, we would come back to him with our suggested motorcycle audio upgrade solution. He made an appointment and dropped off the bike.
Hertz Dieci Speakers Replace Anemic Factory Speakers
One of the first things we here at WSS Westminster Speed & Sound noticed about the bike was that the front speakers were factory-installed components. In simple terms, that means Honda installed both a woofer and a tweeter in the dash of this motorcycle. As we disassembled the system, we realized that only minor modifications to the speaker mounting area were possible, so we wanted to maximize the customer’s return on investment with the limited space available. We chose the Hertz DSK130.3 speaker package for a few reasons. First and foremost, the speakers fit into the factory locations. Second, the 5.25” woofer and .9” tweeter were of much higher quality than the factory Honda speakers.
Once we did our modifications to fit the speakers in the dash, we reinstalled the factory speaker grill, and the bike had a factory finish from the rider’s viewpoint.
Arc Audio Amplifier Adds Power To Keep The Tunes Sounding Great At Speed
On any motorcycle, the biggest thing lacking in the audio system is power. Motorcycles need power to overcome road noise at speed. They also need amplifiers that are very compact, since we all know that space is limited. The amplifiers also have to be very efficient, as the charging system on a motorcycle is much smaller than in a car. Lastly, the system has to be very durable, as it will experience a much broader range of temperature swings, vibration and moisture on a motorcycle than in a car.
One of our go-to brands for motorcycles has been Arc Audio. They make a series of four different amplifiers that fit the bill in every measure and, best of all, they sound great. We have seen many, many new players in the motorcycle audio market, and the vast majority of them are a joke. Many of them are plastic, Chinese-built, off-the-shelf products with no engineering to make them work well on a motorcycle. For this customer, we chose the Arc Audio KS125.2 mini amplifier, which puts out a clean 75 watts per channel of power to the Hertz speakers. It also has a unique audio circuit called “BX2.” When it came time to mount the amplifier, there was no good spot in the fairing to house it, so we chose the right-side storage bag. We mounted the amp on the inside of the bag to preserve as much storage space as possible.
BX2 Circuitry Increases The Perceived Bass For A More Realistic Experience
In a motorcycle, one of the biggest complaints is lack of bass. When you are riding up the road, it is not possible to hear real, deep, low-end bass. What the BX2 circuit does is take the lowest frequencies of music and move them upband where the speakers can reproduce them. Once the BX2 circuit is tuned, you will now hear the kickdrum and the bass guitar in the music. It works incredibly well on a motorcycle. You have to hear it to believe it.
Motorcycle Audio Upgrades By The WSS Technicians Ensures A Lifetime Of Enjoyment
Our team of highly skilled technicians goes overboard with all of the mounting and connections to ensure years of trouble-free listening. We solder and heat-shrink all of our connections for the ultimate in weather resistance.
At the end of the day, it all comes down to the client – does he like the work you did to his bike? Our client loved it. The sound was now crisp and clear, and there was plenty of volume, so he can hear his music clearly at speed.
If you own a Honda Gold Wing F6B motorcycle – or any other bike, for that matter – and you want to improve its sound quality, we invite you to stop by WSS Westminster Speed & Sound with your bike. Let’s go out to your bike and listen to the sound together, and then spend some time getting to know each other. At that point, we will work up custom-designed solutions that best fit your needs.
