A 2002 Volkswagen
Jetta used to transport bicycles and racing gear to
TREK Factory Team events has just emerged from the
shop with
a "sound" makeover. Westminster Speed & Sound
of Westminster, Md., was charged with the task of improving
the vehicles sound quality over its stock stereo system,
as well as integrating a navigation system to get team
members to races in a timely manner.
JBL, a sponsor of
the TREK Factory Team, provided speakers, amps and
subwoofers from its renowned Power Series line
for the installation. Power Series 650C component speakers
were installed into the factory locations in the two
front doors. These speakers consist of a 6.5-inch woofer
and an edge-driven pure titanium dome tweeter, plus
a computer optimized pass-over crossover network. In
the
rear door’s factory locations, a set of JBL P652
6.5-inch 2-way Power Series speakers was installed.
A Harman Kardon TrafficPro AM/FM CD Player with built-in
GPS navigation system replaced the carþs factory
radio.
In the trunk, installers Jack James and Doug
Bollinger with Westminster Speed & Sound faced
the issue of how to properly display amplifiers and
a subwoofer
while
maintaining adequate trunk space needed for storing
racing gear. In answer to this dilemma, a JBL P1220D
12-inch
Power Series subwoofer was installed in a sealed box.
This subwoofer was chosen for its combination of great
sound quality and output while working in a box of
only 1 cubic foot. A pair of PX300.4 amplifiers, which
provides
75 watts of power to each of the four doors, was chosen
to power the system. A PX600.2, which offers 600 watts,
was chosen to power the subwoofer.
The installers mounted
the amplifiers behind Plexiglas to display their beauty
and craftsmanship. Lastly,
they added a cover panel with a two-fold purpose: It
protects
the woofer and amps during everyday use, but it can
also be easily removed in order to display the system.
"
This installation affords the TREK Factory Team a Jetta
that can seamlessly get them from point A to point
B while also providing them with a state-of-the-art
sound
system," said Mark Miller, president, Westminster
Speed & Sound.
Ernie Martin, director of the TREK
Volkswagen Regional Factory Teams, commented, "This
superb installation will benefit team members tremendously,
as the Jetta
travels the country supporting bike races, auto shows
and import automotive shows. Now we can get to our
destination with top-notch sound and without the stress
of finding
our way thanks to JBL speakers and Harman Kardonþs
TrafficPro."
Ottenger, a premier supplier of performance
and body upgrades, is credited with adding a body
kit, new wheels
and a new suspension to the Jetta.
